Let's Learn Konglish Part 1

KongLish is not a fun! It signifies Korean Expressions to a Better English. KongLish phrases and vocabularies are rooted from a direct translation of a movements, actions, appearances or things which could lead to an erroneous usage or application if used to native english speakers. Konglish is a natural terminologies, a great inventions to express their thoughts openly that every Koreans could understand. 

However, a language barrier occurs if a foreigner would not be informed on the meaning of KongLish Expressions. It could be misinterpreted that would lead to double meaning.

Well, because I love Koreans then I love Konglish as well, its right meaning and usage must be properly taught for better globalize communication.

Hereunder are the following KongLish that I encountered during my stay in Korea;

1. Oh! I have a 미팅.

• 미팅 (Meeting)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Blind Date"]

2. Before riding on my 오토바이, I put an 액세서리 on my bag inside my 오픈카.

• 오토바이 (Autobike)
  •  [For Korean, they mean "Motorcycle”]
• 액세서리(Accessory)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Jewelry"]
• 오픈카 (Open Car)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Convertible"]

3. During our 아이 쇼핑, I bought an 핸디 번.

• 아이 쇼핑 (Eye Shopping)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Window Shopping”]
• 핸디 번(Handy Phone)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Mobile Phone / Cellphone”]

4. Cheers! Let's 완샷...

• 완샷(One Shot)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Bottom’s Up”]

        5. Do you 오바이트 when you're drunken?

• 오바이트 (Over eat)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Vomit / Throw out”]

6. Before I start working, I am always looking on my 다이어리.

• 다이어리 (Diary)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Daily Planner”]

7. I am drafting a dream home floor plan with the use of 사프.

• 사프 (Sharp)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Mechanical Pencil / Lead Pencil”]

8. Wow! Great 사인.

• 사인(Sign)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Autograph”]

9. Kindly put my groceries on a 비닐.

• 비닐(Vinyl)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Plastic”]

10. Let's start the exam, please don't 커닝.

• 커닝(Cunning)
  • [For Korean, they mean "Cheating”]

11. All Koreans are wearing 팬티.

• 팬티(Panty)
  • [For Korean, they mean a general for an “Underwear”]
  • [In Real English, Panty is for Women; Brief is for Men]

12. Shhh...Rated X! Wow! I like a 글래머 Lady.

• 글래머(Glamour)
  • [For Korean, they mean “Voluptuous”]

13. My girlfriend is having her 매니큐어 and 페디큐어.

• 매니큐어(Manicure)
• 페디큐어(Pedicure)
  • [Manicure and Pedicure are correct English, “Nail Polish” is another term]
